Have you ever wondered if or what foods might be causing you symptoms, but did not know how to find out?

The FAILSAFE or Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Strict elimination diet has been created to help people investigate if foods could be causing their symptoms.

These diets are created by two separate groups, but they are essentially the same thing. The Failsafe diet was developed by Sue and Howard Dengate and is based on the RPAH diet. Sue and Howard found this diet helped their own family immensely and now teach and support people how to do it, as well as advocate to food industry for better labelling and less additives in our foods.

What does it involve?

The strict version of the diet is very bland and basically involves the removal of all foods with any artificial colours, flavours and preservatives as well as highly coloured or flavoured fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables contain varying levels of salicylates, amines and glutamates, which are natural chemicals found in those foods. Unfortunately some people who are sensitive to the artificial chemicals are also sensitive to the natural versions too. This may seem crazy, but lots of people find that this diet makes a huge difference to a range of different symptoms.

The idea is that you start with a bland diet and then when you feel like you have achieved enough of a reduction, or removal of symptoms, then you challenge different food groups to work out which foods affect you and which ones do not. It is meant to be a relatively short term diet purely for the benefit of diagnosing food intolerance.

So what type of symptoms can be caused by food chemicals?

There are so many symptoms that this diet can resolve; headaches/ migraines, eczema, other skin conditions, brain fog, IBS, fatigue that is not resolved by sleeping, behavioural problems and concentration problems particularly in kids, bed wetting, frequent illness and so many more. 

Yes many of these symptoms come with other conditions, but in my experience a lot of the time when medical professionals don't find any other answers, you can find the answers in the foods you eat. 

Once you identify foods that are causing the issue you can begin to reclaim your health and maybe even discover how the problems began. Sometimes food intolerances begin as a result of a parasite, heavy antibiotic usage, a virus or exposure to toxic mould for example. But first things first. Identify if food is an issue, get yourself feeling better and then you can look further.. 

Seek out help to do this diet from a health professional experienced in the area before you begin as this diet, is not meant to be long term and it is difficult to do without support.
